I just read Tina Fey's book (four years after everyone else) and it was very funny and a quick read so pick it up. Here is her excerpts on her weight - FANTASTIC! I love all of her observances, EXCEPT, really....size 12 is fat? Hmmmmm. Maybe to a size four person.
Tina Fey -
Remembrances of Being Very Very Skinny
For a brief time at the turn of the century, I was skinny. This is what I remember about that period.
I was cold all the time.
I had a pair of size four corduroy shorts. That I wore. To work. In the middle of Manhattan.
I loved it when people told me I was getting too thin.
I once took a bag of sliced red peppers to the beach as a snack.
I regularly ate healthy food cookies so disgusting that when I enthusiastically gave one to Rachel Dratch she drew a picture of a rabbit and broke the cookie into a trail of tiny pieces coming out of the rabbit's butt.
Men I had met before suddenly paid attention to me...and I hated them for it.
Sometimes I had to sleep with a pillow between my legs because my bony knees clanking together kept me awake.
I had a lot of time on my hands because I wasn't constantly eating.
I ran three miles a day on a treadmill six days a week.
I felt wonderfully superior to everyone.
I didn't have kid yet.
Remembrances of Being a Little Bit Fat
For a brief time at the end of last century, I was overweight. This is what I remember from that period.
My boobs were bigger.
I once left a restaurant tin the middle of dessert to get to Krispy Kreme before it closed.
Even though I only liked McDonald's fries, I believed it was more nutritious to make a meal of it and have two cheeseburgers as well.
If I was really ambitious, I would get a Whopper Jr at Burger King and then walk to McDonalds to get the fries. The shake could be from anywhere.
I could not run a mile.
I wore oversize mens overalls that I LOVED.
Guys who were friends with me did not want to date me...and I hated them for it.
On at least three occasions, I vomited on Christmas Eve from mixing chocolate, peel and eat shrimp, summer sausage and cheese. No alcohol was involved.
As a size twelve, I took pride in the idea that I was a "real woman" sized. "Size twelve is the national average," I would boast, "no matter what magazines try to tell you."
Once, while ironing in my underwear, I grazed my protruding belly with the hot iron.

Better than fat camp
My nieces decided that we would run stations after dinner. I thought that was a cute idea but I didn't realize that they really knew what they were doing! They created HARDER stations than fat camp! So, if an 8 year old can do it....
Here were the stations:
1 - jump rope for 1 minute
2 - jumping jacks for 1 minute (and water break)
3 - ball dribble/hop for 1 minute
4 - run up the hill for 1 minute
We ran the stations several times and then did a contest - how many times can you get up the hill in 3 minutes:
Scab - 7 times
Willa - 4 times
Auntie - 3 times
Erma - none (too tired)

As if I need any more attention to the size of my bum.....
Yes! I went to the gym AND THEN THE STORE with my exercise pants on backwards.
Was I really that tired? Was I really that lazy? Obviously, the answer is yes.

Weigh In
Bad news is that I am up .5 pounds but the good news is that my vacation was filled with food and alcohol and desserts, so....ok. I am back in the gym.

Update
I can't sit down.
Literally.
When I do sit down, I can't get back up.
I need to reevaluate this new gym routine.
I can barely type.

my first day at trying this new gym program
Good news - I completed the three rotations in under 20 minutes!
Bad news - I don't think I'll be able to lift my arms tomorrow!
Good news - While it was very challenging, I felt confident while doing it.
Bad news - I will need to up the challenge and add some more reps.
I will see what I feel like tomorrow, but my immediate thoughts are to keep the rotation at this for the week and then next week bump it up on all levels.
The easisest was the plank. (I can't believe I said that.) Only because I have been doing them all month so 15 seconds wasn't difficult. The hardest as the lunge which I have always struggled with.
I did 3 rotations without stopping:
squats 20
push ups 15
lunges 20
dumbbell row 20, 8 pounds
plank 15 seconds
jumping jacks 20

pedometers
I FINALLY broke down and ordered the new Jawbone. I'm not sure if it will make a difference, but people seem to love them. Everyone has one or the Fitbit. Now, I have heard that Apple is coming out with one and if it here by Christmas, I want it! (Family...hint, hint, hint.)
If you are using your Jawbone and have any tips, please let me know.

Monday Motivation
If you have the opportunity to see Arnold's ESPN 30 for 30, watch it. I could not believe what he had to do to reach his goals. AMAZING!

Does anyone know what Spark People is?
It has come up in articles several times in the past week.
http://www.sparkpeople.com/
I think it is a free website that is all about diet, exercise and health. I love the idea of having an online support community. I popped over to the site and they had several things that looked super interesting.
But...ya know what? I was only on for a few minutes and was absolutely BOMBARDED by ads. If you are going to offer a free site/blog, I understand the motivation to put the ads in but honestly, I would rather pay a few dollars and actually be able to read an article without three different pop up ads.
I am very interested in the site if anyone is using it, or had a better experience, let me know.

Finally...some guidance
It has been driving me crazy that I can not do one push up. Actually, I have had a weak upper body since birth. :) I remember being tested in seventh grade in the bent arm hang. To this day, I can remember how embarrassed I was that I only lasted four seconds!
Absolutely NO upper body strength.
One of my goals that I am really excited about is adding weight training to my schedule. I have always slacked on this. (INCLUDING my time at fat camp. I would consistently skip my weights/core class everyday.)
I know that the more muscle I build, the more calories I will burn, so I am on a mission to keep up my training. And, one of the great things is that you really only need your body to lift weights! So, while I am using the machines at the gym, I am also doing the following exercises 4-5 times/week.
Plank - 45 seconds
Situps - 10 with no help
Jumping Jacks - 30
Tridips - 10 (I should probably be doing 3 sets of 10. Need to look at this.)
Pushups - 10 against the wall
Leglifts - 5
When I went to do my pushups, I could not do 1. So that is when I started doing them against the wall. I wasn't EXACTLY sure what the actual progression would be. When would I be able to start doing a normal push up??? And then I read this - http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/02/15/proper-push-up/
Nerd fitness guy gives a great explanation on how to start and when to progress.
If I stay really committed to this program, maybe I can do one pushup by xmas???

Anniversary!!!
It has been 3 years since I had a McDonald's burger. This is amazing!
Honestly, I don't think about it much anymore. There aren't as many fast food options in Australia so it is easy to go to a cafe instead of a drive thru. (There are no drive thrus for miles.)
My mouth does start to water when I think about a Big Mac or a Quarter Pounder. I am curious that after 3 years if it would still taste good to me? I want to try it for that reason alone.
But I will persist and prevail. I would have NEVER believed I could go this long without crispy french fries and two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and a sesame seed bun!

only six days this week
for my weigh in and I still managed to lose two pounds!
I am so excited!
Success definitely breeds success. I am more excited about my workouts. I pay more attention to what I am eating. I am in a healthy place, but...about to go on holiday. Let's hope I am able to make some healthy choices.

Getting inspired
When I am in a rut I sometimes struggle to find ideas or inspiration on keeping the weight loss going. At the check out today, I noticed a People magazine entirely devoted to people who have lost weight, what they did to do it and how much they lost. SOLD!
Don't you love a good success story?
Even if I only get one or two ideas, it is worth it.
On a separate note, I have done four days in the gym in a row! Tomorrow may or may not be a break day but I feel great. Weigh in is on Wednesday this week.

Not running but no excuses
If I can't burn my calories by running, I need to find another way. So I joined a new gym three days ago and have gone every day. I am making the elliptical my machine of choice. I can get a great cardio workout and not have all the pressure on my ankles, knees, tendons, etc.
I am also using this opportunity to do weights which has been on my list forever. I am rotating arms and legs every other day.

Congrats to Tim!
Tim started at 1 and has added 1 pushup to his day everyday. He finally hit 100 a day!
As part of my workout, I have added push ups. So my goal was 1.
I tried 1 push up and could not do it.
I tried 1 push up (reverse - starting at the top and lowering down) and could not do it.
I tried 1 push up against the wall and could not do it.
I tried 1 push up against the wall and moved closer and I did it! I did 5!
So that is my base and I will keep working towards so upper body fitness.

Sunday - Thursday weigh in
I had to do my Sunday weigh in (which is now a Friday weigh in) on Thursday this week. And...I stayed exactly the same. On the one had this is a bummer, but on the other, there were a lot of treats consumed this week, so I should probably be grateful!

I'm done and I am sad
I went for a small yesterday and my leg is still right. I limped through my run. I got home and I think I have achilles tendonitis to go along with my perenial tendonitis. I was talking to my sister. Both her and her husband started running the same time I did and neither one has ever been injured. Whereas I go from injury to injury.
I have decided to give up running which is freaking me out. I know it was a key contributor to my weight loss success.
That also means I need to get up and get to the gym every morning to make up for the lack of running time.

Go me!
I am back running. Something still isn't right but I am just running through it.
I started on a 2 mile track.
1st time - stopped and walked twice.
2nd time - stopped and walked once.
3rd time - didn't stop at all AND these two girls passed me. Whatever! But they stopped to walk up the hill and I ran up it. One of the girls turned to me and said she was really proud of me because that was hard.
Darn right!

Puppy help
I just want to put it out there that it is more difficult to do a plank when a puppy comes up and starts licking your face while you are doing it.
The 20 seconds was difficult so I will need to modify which I am fine with.
The rest of today is spent on an airplane.

The rest of today is spent on an airplane.
It is very difficult to get on a flight without buying chocolate
This is what goes through my mind-
What if I don't like the dessert?
What if I get hungry?
What if there isn't enough food served?
What if I have a sugar craving?
I am freaking out at the gate but instead of buying candy, I bought Living Healthy magazine.

July - planking
Ok, while I didn't do great on the abs challenge, I am feeling much more confident with the plank challenge. Starts today!
