Looking for 5ks

It seems that Americans just love 5ks. While I can find races in most countries, they just aren't as prolific as they are in the US. So, I am going to slightly change my criteria that it doesn't need to be an official 5K race to run, but I have to run 5k. :)

Right now, thoughts are:

April - small, very small chance of Jakarta, Indonesia for Easter
May - New Zealand
July - Germany AND Poland
Aug - USA
Oct - Hong Kong if I have any money left!!!!

Now it is just becoming a little silly. I am looking everywhere for cheap airfare to different countries so I can run around. I guess there are worse things to do! :)

I am a speed demon!!!!!

The results just posted from the Run for the Kids and I averaged 8.26 kms. That is awesome. Right now I am doing an 8 minute km pace during workouts, so to do this over 5ks is really good. And the 45 minutes is a 5.4km! YEA ME!!!!!!!!!

AND....I finished in the top 45%!
Bring on the marathon!!! :)

Sunday Weigh In

and...race day #2!
I lost .4 pounds this week and woke up to a beautiful morning ready to do 5.4k.

I was hoping for a little more weight off but I ate out a lot this week. So, I'll take what I get. :)
More importantly, my second 5k was this beautiful morning - the Run for the Kids here in Melbourne.

Where to next?????  Looking at NZ.

Good travel options

I am going to start traveling more for work - lots of trips back and forth to Canberra. What are so good tips for both food and exercise? I am going up on Monday so I'll still play tennis Monday night. But in general, I wont get up at 4am to workout to make my plane! Also, what are the no sugar, healthy options for brekkie and lunch?

I will try and still do oatmeal for brekkie.
Healthy cafe lunch.
Bring healthy snacks in my purse. Healthy snacks could be the key! :)

I had how many teaspoons of sugar?!?!?

Having seen the sugar movie, I decided that I would try and keep my processed sugars to 6 tsp/day. Since I am not going to count fruit and vegetables, this seemed reasonable. After all, I watch everything I eat!

WOW!

It was not easy! Breakfast was my normal oatmeal, 1/2 cup milk and 1 tsp sugar. So, I thought, that equals one. Nope. Turns out milk has sugar which equals about 1.5 tsps. So my super healthy breakfast already took 2 tsp.

I ended up eating a lot of whole foods which is great! I was more carb heavy than I would normally be but I wasn't hungry either. There is one tsp for every 6 grams of sugar so I ate 7 teaspoons on my first day. I thought that was pretty good. We will see what the scale says....

That Sugar Film

Merilyn and I went to see That Sugar Film. I went thinking it was going to be more of the same and that I may learn something new. Well, it was more of the same and I did learn some new things.

I need to preface this by saying that the film was an almost EXACT duplicate to Morgan Spurlock's Supersize Me. The film maker eats 40 tsp of fructose every day which is what the average Australian eats. The twist is that it is in "healthy foods" such as yogurt, cereal, granola bars, pasta sauce, etc.  He doesn't eat any fast food or candy.  It is all foods which are "good for you."

Here is the single most important learning from the movie and it is mind-blowing....  he eats LESS calories than he did as a whole food eater and he gains over 20 pounds!  FEWER CALORIES but he GAINS WEIGHT. Proving that QUALITY OF CALORIE is so important.

It has really made me think about the role of whole foods in my diet. While eating a processed food once in awhile is fine, for the most part, your body does not want it.

He talks about how hard it is to ween himself off the sugar once he is on it. I have often said I have a sugar addiction. He talks about how mice will take sugar over cocaine. Sugar is an addictive substance and our bodies just can not process all the fructose.

While everything in moderation is needed, the new standard set out in America is 6 tsp for women and 9 for men. I think most of us would really struggle to hit those numbers.

I'm not giving up my nightly bite of chocolate but that still leaves a few teaspoons! :)

Sunday Weigh In

I am really happy that I am almost back in the 220s.  Another good week and it is all back on track. I don't think I have any big challenges this week so I am excited for a positive, great week.

Singapore Results and Way to go Deb!

The Venus run FINALLY posted their results and I am not surprised that it is my slowest 5k time. Not fussed! My goal was to finish without stopping and that is what I did! Final time was 48:28. :)

On a separate note, a big shout out to my friend Debbie. She decided to join our running group and walk the Tan this morning, which is a really big deal.  Not only did she fly through by herself....she did it an hour earlier than everyone because I told her 7:00am and...we meet at 8:00. Well done to Debbie and apologies, again. And again. :)

I am going to be RIPPED when I am 50

Many of you have seen, tried or heard of the 30 day challenges. There is the plank, core, beach body, squat, etc....  One of the more popular is the 30 day ab challenge. I have tried this challenge many times but the reality is that it is just gets too intense, too quickly.

http://30dayfitnesschallenges.com/

In February, I thought I would try a new way of accomplishing the challenge. I would do a day in a week. Then I would do the second day for a week, etc. This way I would complete the challenge in 30 weeks. I thought that was pretty good.

The reality is that it was still too fast for my weak core. BUT I HAVENT GIVEN UP! I am still doing the ab challenge but am doing a day a month. It will take me 30 months or approximately 3 years to get through it all. But I am not on a timeline. I am more excited by the fact that I can actually accomplish the challenge and slowly do it.

I have completed my first month.
29 more to go!

I have found my people...and they exercise in Singapore!

WOW! Can you imagine a whole race full of ladies who run TD or walk/run? That is the 5k that I did today, which by the way, was the absolute HARDEST 5k I have ever done. When I signed up for this race, I thought....Singapore is flat on reclaimed land, this will be a good race. Little did I know that half way through the run, we would be running to a stadium area and running up the ramps to the top and then back down. Seriously. It was already 90* and 95% humidity. Wasn't that enough?

But...I DID IT! I did not stop and walk. I ran the whole time and considering I was surrounded by TD runners, I finished in the mid-pack. :)

BIGGEST thanks to Pookey for being my support, my photographer and all around awesome friend.

Funny Friday

I am trying to read a poem a day, and this really sums it up....
